Even a Tiny Flame Lifts the Heavy Lid of Night

“Even a tiny flame lifts the heavy lid of night.  How much more light will you make, all together, if you bond as one in the communion of the Church!  If you love Jesus, love the Church! …. At difficult moments in the Church’s life, the pursuit of holiness becomes even more urgent.  And holiness is not a question of age; it is a matter of living in the Holy Spirit….  Do not let hope die!  Stake your lives on it!  We are not the sum of our weaknesses and failures; we are the sum of the Father’s love for us and our real capacity to become the image of His Son.”    (World Youth Day,Toronto, 2002)

“Even a tiny flame lifts the heavy lid of night.”  These words by our now Blessed John Paul II, inspire all our hearts and efforts to keep going forward in hope.  We all hope to make a difference – one heart, one soul at a time.  We, the Sisters of Life, link our hands with yours, beloved co-workers of life, as we “bond as one in the communion of the Church!”

You have heard it before but it is always worth repeating, THANK YOU.  Thank you for placing your flame of love, hope, and faith at the service of LIFE.  As Jesus tells us, “You are the Salt of the Earth and the Light of the world.”  Let your Light shine so that God the Father may be glorified!  And yes, all of us at times, feel we don’t have much of a flame, but perhaps only a flicker.  No matter:  “Even a tiny flame lifts the heavy lid of night.”

How to keep the flame alive; how to keep the salt from going flat?  The answer lies in prayer, fasting, and the Sacraments.  Pray especially with Sacred Scripture in order to encounter Jesus, the Word of Life.  To know Him in His Word, to love Him who is the Word, to serve Him, the Word of Life and Love.  The Rosary is also a form of contemplative prayer.  It is our weapon in the spiritual battle.  Pray constantly from the heart.  And prayer combined with fasting is even more POWERFUL!  As Jesus said in the 9th Chapter of Mark, “This kind of demon can only be cast out by prayer and fasting.”  Fasting is part of being a disciple of the Lord.  He said in the Sermon on the Mount, “When you fast….”  Notice Jesus did not say “If”; He said “when.”  So Jesus gives us an expectation, not an option:  “When you fast….”  Ask Mary for the grace to fast and to help you know how, in particular, to fast.  “Even a tiny flame lifts the heavy lid of night.”

Finally, the Sacraments fill us with grace!!!  May Blessed Mother help you to live a deeper sacramental life with Holy Mass (weekly Mass if possible), Eucharistic Adoration, and monthly Confession.  Frequent Confession helps keep our souls pure, keep our hearts open and receptive to the Lord, and make us docile to the inspirations of the Holy Spirit.  As we respond to God’s will in our daily lives, know with greater hope that, “Even a tiny flame lifts the heavy lid of night.”
